Two arrested in Mount Prospect shooting

Nov. 20--Two men have been arrested in connection with a drive-by shooting in Mount Prospect earlier this month, police said.

Julio Avila, 21, of Rolling Meadows, and Eduardo Casto, 18, also of Rolling Meadows, have each been charged with one count of aggravated battery with a firearm, according to a statement from Mount Prospect police.

Police said the charges stem from Nov. 5 shooting in the northwest suburb. About 8:19 p.m., Castro and Avila were riding in a car heading westbound on Algonquin Road just west of Dempster Street. The two spotted a group of men standing near a dumpster on the street and yelled something out the window, police said.

Avila, who was riding in the front passenger seat, allegedly fired three shots at the group. A 21-year-old Arlington Heights man was shot in his arm and was later treated at Northwest Community Hospital for non-life threatening injuries, police said.

A 38-year-old man, also from Arlington Heights, was grazed by a bullet. Police found a bullet hole on his clothing, but the man was uninjured, police said.

On Tuesday, Avila and Castro were arrested for the shooting and charged, police said. The two appeared in bond court on Wednesday. Avila was ordered held on $300,000 bond, and Castro was held on $150,000 bond, according to court records.

The two are set to appear in court next on December 12, according to court records.
