Two arrested in connection with James 'Mago' Gately shooting at petrol station near Dublin Airport

Two men have been arrested in connection with a horror shooting where a close friend of the Hutch family was sprayed with bullets at a petrol station.

James 'Mago' Gately made a miraculous escape after being hit five times in the upper body on Clonshaugh Road in May 2017.

The 32-year-old escaped with his life thanks to a bulletproof vest and an off-duty nurse who happened to be at the scene.

It's believed the incident was connected to the bloody Kinahan/Hutch feud while gardai later said it was incredibly fortunate nobody else was hurt.

About 70 people were at the scene when a black Lexus pulled up beside Gately and started firing from the window while he filled his car.

Superintendent Finbar Murphy called the brazen daylight hit attempt "outrageous"

He said: "He pulled up in his car, he was approached by another car, who shot a number of shots in through the window of his car as he was sitting in the front seat of his car.

"He was shot in the upper body and neck.

"It was sunny at 1.30pm in the afternoon. As you can see, there were bullets in different directions, any innocent person could have been injured in the attack."

Gardai have now arrested two men who are being detained in separate Dublin Garda Stations.

It's the third arrest in total in connection with the shooting.

A spokesman told Dublin Live: "Two men, aged in their 20s and 50s, have been arrested in relation to this incident.

"They are currently detained under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act at Coolock and Ballymun Garda Stations respectively.

"Investigations are ongoing. This is the third arrest in total in relation to this investigation."
