Two arrested in connection with Edinburgh Hogmanay murder

Two people have been arrested in connection with the death of a 38-year-old man in Edinburgh on Hogmanay.

Marc Webley, 38, was shot outside the Anchor Inn pub in Granton, Edinburgh.

It is understood he was celebrating with friends.

Police were called to the scene in Granton Crescent at about 11.50pm and he was taken to hospital, along with a 39-year-old man who was also injured.

In a statement on Tuesday, Police Scotland said a red Hyundai Tucson pulled up beside the men in West Granton Road. The driver got out and fired the gun before getting back in and heading towards Leith.

Webley was pronounced dead a short time later at hospital.

A 32-year-old man and 25-year-old woman have been arrested in connection with the incident and enquiries are ongoing.

Detective Superintendent Graham Grant, Major Investigation Team, said: “We’d like to thank the local community for their support and patience while enquiries are ongoing.

"There will continue to be an increased police presence in the area and anyone with further concerns should speak to officers, call 101, or in the case of an emergency, 999.”

Police have not officially released the dead man’s name, however tributes have been paid to Webley by family and friends, including his former partner Jane Park, the Edinburgh EuroMillions lottery winner, who said she is “devastated”.

Park won £1 million on the EuroMillions when she was 17 in 2013.

In 2005, Webley and and James Tant were each sentenced to 11 years at Glasgow High Court for attempted murder in Edinburgh earlier that year.

Webley, who was 19 at the time, shot another man in Granton in what was described as a failed gangland hit.

The National: Police searching and investigating the area near the pub

He had previously posted videos on social media daring those who he considered "rivals" to come and get him. On the night he was shot, he posted numerous videos.

In the first video he is seen to say: "You could come to the pub. I'll only be here a couple of hours. It surely gies you enough time. You've had all day to make an effort. Yous talk a good fight so when you're  ... saying 'we're gonna kill him, we're gonna kill him', well here I fucking am.

"Come and get it. I don't think you'll come."

In a second video, he said: "Still at the pub. Wee bit drunk so you'd be at an advantage, it would be a good advantage. I don't see it though. Nah, honestly I don't. Come and give me a wee tuppence and you get a strike that ends the show."

Police told press said the shooting is an “isolated targeted attack” and that “this type of reckless criminality will not be tolerated”.
