Two arrested in connection with Ballyfermot fatal shooting of father-of-two Michael Tormey

A man and a woman have been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting in west Dublin.

Father-of-two Michael Tormey, who gardai confirmed had no involvement in crime, was shot three times to the chest with a handgun at around 4.35am outside his house on the Thomond road in Ballyfermot on January 9.

The pair arrested, a man aged in his early 40s and a woman aged in her late 30s, are currently being held for questioning at Garda stations in west Dublin.

The major investigation into the killing of the 49-year-old in his front garden is ongoing as gardai follow a number of lines of inquiry in a bid to establish a motive.

Investigators ruled out any link to a party that Mr Tormey had attended earlier in the night and they remain baffled as to why he was targeted.

The Irish Mirror revealed last week that gardai believe the murder had all the hallmarks of a professional hit.

A statement issued by gardai on Thursday, said: "A man in his early 40s and a woman in her late 30s have been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a man in his 40s that occurred at a residence in the Thomond Road area of Ballyfermot, County Dublin on Sunday, January 9, 2022.

"Both persons are being detained under the provisions of Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act, 2007, at Garda Stations in West Dublin.

"Investigations are ongoing.

"Gardai are continuing to appeal for anyone with information in relation to this incident, in particular, anyone who may have been in the Thomond Road, Landen Road, Kylemore Road or the general Decies area between 3:30am and 5:30am on the morning of Sunday, 9th January, 2022."

Gardai can be contacted at Ballyfermot Garda Station on 01 666 7200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.
