CHENNAI: City police on Friday arrested two people for forging documents and taking possession of a land parcel worth 50 lakh in Tiruvallur.
Police said Lalitha Devi of Kallikuppam owned a plot in Perumalpet village in the district. "Recently, she came to know that a few people were performing puja on her land. On visiting her land, she found some people had erected a hut on it and claimed they had recently bought the land," an officer explained.
Lalitha showed documents that the land belonged to her and later lodged a complaint with the anti-land grabbing cell in Tiruvallur district. A special team headed by SP Varunkumar was formed and after inquiries, and scrutinising documents, police found that Lalitha's land documents were forged by Ezhumalai, of Perumalpattu, and Purushothaman, of Nadukuthagai. The duo then posed as the land owners and sold it at a much higher price.
Police arrested the two. Inquiries revealed that the two had noticed that the owner rarely visited the land and went ahead with the crime. They were produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody. Police are checking if they have committed more such frauds.
