Two arrested for damaging Luke Kelly statue in Dublin on separate occasions

Two men have been arrested in connection with the criminal damage of the beloved Luke Kelly statue on two different occasions this year.

The arrests come just days after The Dubliners singer's statue on Sheriff Street was vandalised for a fifth time in 18 months on Friday night.

But, gardai confirmed to Dublin Live that the arrests were not connected to this incident but instead separate attacks that happened to the Guild Street statue in January and March.

A file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions in relation to these arrests with investigations continuing on the other incidents including the late night one on Friday night.

A Garda spokesman told Dublin Live: "Gardaí in Store Street investigating the criminal damage of the statue that is situated on Guild Street, have arrested two men in relation to separate incidents of criminal damage on the statue.

"The statue has been damaged a number of times and these arrests refer to the damage of January and March, 2020. A file is now being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions in relation to these arrests.

He added: "Investigations are still ongoing into the other matters of criminal damage.

Local Councillor Christy Burke, who was instrumental in having the statue commissioned, slammed those responsible, telling them to "grow up and get a grip".

He said: "To the culprits that's doing this, you'll never destroy Luke's legacy.

"There's no words to describe you, the proud people of Sheriff St will never forgive you.

"DCC at my request will again clean Luke first thing in the morning. Grow up and get a grip."

The head was cleaned up and restored to normal on Saturday morning with calls for CCTV and protection around the statue being made by locals.
