Two arrested after threatening shop workers with a hammer before fleeing with cash

Gardai have arrested a man and a woman after an armed robbery in Malahide last night.

It is understood that just before 10:00 pm a man walked into a retail premise in Waterside and was armed with a hammer.

He threatened staff members into handing over cash before fleeing in a vehicle that was waiting outside.

Officers say no one was injured during the incident, and a short time later two suspects were taken into custody at two separate stations where they remain at this point.

A statement released this afternoon explained: “Gardaí have arrested two people following a robbery in Malahide last night, Saturday 22nd January 2022.

“Shortly before 10:00 pm a male entered retail premises in Waterside, Malahide armed with a hammer and forced members of staff to open the till before proceeding to take a sum of cash.

“He then left the scene in a vehicle which had been waiting outside the premises. No staff member required medical treatment after the incident.

“A man in his 30s and a woman in her 50s were arrested a short time later and were brought to two Dublin Garda stations where they are both detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.”

Investigations are ongoing.
