Two arrested after Sunderland man left with serious injuries

A man is in hospital with serious injuries after an an attack in Sunderland.

The 32-year-old man was attacked on Pretoria Square. He left the scene and went to an address on Helvellyn Road, Sunderland, on Sunday at around 10.42am.

An air ambulance landed at the scene and witnesses described how police closed off the road.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At 10.42 on Sunday, police received a report via the ambulance service that a man had been assaulted.

“It is believed he was attacked on Pretoria Square before leaving the scene and attending an address on Helvellyn Road.

“The man – aged 32 – is currently in hospital with serious injuries.

“A 33-year-old woman has been arrested for wounding with intent to commit GBH and a 29-year-old man has been arrested for grievous bodily harm. Both remain in custody.”

“Enquiries are ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 quoting log 379 15/03/2020.”

Residents on the street said they were shocked to see so much police activity with one person describing “blue lights everywhere.”

One woman, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “I don’t know what happened it looked like whatever it was happened at the bottom of the road.

“I just saw lots of police going past and someone said they closed the road off.

“Everyone came out to see what was going on because there were lots of sirens.

“It was a bit of a shock. I just hope everyone is okay.”

Another resident said: “People were trying to drive down the road and police diverted them around.

“I don’t know what happened but it looked serious. There were just blue lights everywhere.

“I think an air ambulance landed on the field too.”
