Two men arrested after police incident at Cardiff mosque

Two men have been arrested following an incident at a mosque in Cardiff this morning.

It happened at around 1.30am at Dar Ul-Isra on Wyeverne Road in Cathays.

The two men, who are aged 18 and 19, and are from Cardiff and are in police custody.

A South Wales Police spokesman has said there is currently nothing to link this incident with a murder investigation which has closed nearby Park Place.

In a statement the spokesman added: "An investigation into this incident is ongoing.

"Officers are not currently looking for anybody else in connection with it."

In a statement the Muslim Council of Wales and the Dar Ul-Isra said: "Nobody from the mosque was injured and the police have arrested the two individuals that were involved.

"The police are not dealing [with] this situation and continuing their investigations.

"We thank South Wales Police for their swift response."

Student journalist Yusuf Khan witnessed some of the incident.

He said: “I was walking passed around 1.30am and there was three police cars and a van.

“A person was carried out by police."

A spokesman for the Dar Ul-Isra mosque called on people not to speculate.

He said: "Mosques are especially busy in the month of Ramadan as the faithful wish to both open their fasts and pray the night prayers in congregation. We encourage all mosques to maintain vigilance and work with police and local authorities to ensure that worshippers are safe during prayers.

"It is understandable that the general community around Cathays including the Muslim who use Dar Ul-Isra Community Center may feel afraid and concerned. However, it is important for everyone, including the media, to allow South Wales Police to undertake an investigation without speculation."
