Two arrested after police find 15 catalytic converters in the back seat after a chase

Two people have been arrested after police found more than 15 catalytic converters in the back seat of a car they'd been chasing through Bolton.

Officers from Greater Manchester Police's traffic division spotted the grey Jaguar on the M60 near junction 16, Clifton Interchange.

They followed the car into Bolton, but when they tried to pull the vehicle over, the driver sped off, and police started to chase.

The driver led officers into Salford, before crashing at the junction of Queensway and Bolton Road in Swinton.

Officers were able to arrest the driver and passenger with the help of the police helicopter, before finding more than 15 catalytic converters in the back seat.

An officer posted about the pursuit on Twitter alongside pictures of the car.

It read: "ME11 got behind this Jaguar on the M60 near J16.

"It was followed into Bolton where it then failed to stop.

"Pursued into Salford and crashed Queensway.

"With the aid of National Police Air Service North West the driver and passenger were detained. Over 15 catalytic converters found."

Catalytic converters are devices fitted to vehicle exhausts to convert toxic gases and pollutants from exhaust fumes, reducing the amount of dangerous gases emitted into the atmosphere.

They are often targeted by thieves as they contain valuable metals such as platinum, palladium, and rhodium, and can be removed in less than a minute.

Thieves will often then try to sell the converters to scrapyards, online, or ship them outside of the country.

Motorists can try and reduce the risk of having their catalytic converters stolen by parking in a well-lit area close to a wall or fence, making it difficult to access, or fitting a lock or guard to their car to protest the device.
