She said on Saturday evening that she was making her way back to the sanctuary with the horse in the back of her horse box, who was back on her feet for the trip back to the rescue centre.

"We did what we could and we got her up and she's now in the back. She's munching on her hay, it was the hay that got her in the box.

"We don't know how old she is. We're now going to go home and call the vet out."

It's the second time the sanctuary were called out to assist a horse over the Easter weekend.

On Friday, a horse nicknamed 'Gary' by animal welfare campaigners collapsed in a Lidl car park in Queensferry and the Whispering Willows team travelled to rescue it.

People were quick to praise Sandra and the animal sanctuary for rescuing the animal in Cardiff, and sent their well wishes to the horse though social media.

Teresa Kinglsey wrote: "You guys are great. Poor little girl. So glad you have her, especially if she is a foal. So lovely to see her munching on her hay."

"You are an amazing team, well done," Lisa Waddy-Griffiths said.

Jullie Webber-Moran added: "Thank god this horse has been picked up and on her way to [a] happy life".

Simon Evans, an RSPCA officer at the scene, confirmed that two people had been arrested on suspicion of offences under the Animal Welfare Act.

He added that the horse was due to be seen by a vet on Saturday night.

South Wales Police have so far declined to comment on the incident.
