Two arrested after early morning police chase across two counties

Two men have been arrested after an early morning police chase that crossed two counties and ended in a crash.

The chase started on Ashley Way in Widnes after the driver of a VW Golf refused to stop for police Officers then pursued the car into Merseyside where the Golf then crashed into a mini bus in Hunts Cross.

Police said two men fled the car and tried to run off. Officers said they arrested two men around 12.30am on Thursday (May 2) and took them to hospital.

A spokesperson for Cheshire Police told the ECHO : "At around 12.07am on Wednesday 2 May an officer attempted to stop a White VW Golf on the Ashley Way in Widnes.

"The vehicle failed to stop and the officer pursued the vehicle which travelled into Merseyside. 

"After approximately seven minutes the vehicle came to a stop after colliding with a stationary minibus on Woodend Avenue and two men fled the area on foot. 

"Following a search of the area two men were arrested on suspicion of a number of offences."

Two men, both 21, have been arrested for a number of offences .

One of the men has been arrested on suspicion of failing to stop, dangerous driving, theft of a motor vehicle, possession of an offensive weapon and possession of a controlled drug (Cannabis).

A second 21-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle, possession of an offensive weapon and possession of a controlled drug (Cannabis). 

The spokesman confirmed:"Both of the men have since been taken to hospital.

"As a result of the collision Cheshire Constabulary is referring the incident to the IOPC (Independent Office for Police Conduct)."

Merseyside Police also helped detain the men once the pursuit crossed the county border.
