Two arrested after 'cannabis sweets' send 17 north London schoolgirls to hospital

Police have made two arrests after children at a north London school were given sweets apparently laced with a cannabis compound.

Pupils at La Sainte Union Catholic School in Highgate fell ill on Monday morning after eating the sweets, believed to have contained THC, during morning break.

As a precaution, 17 children were taken to hospital. Initially, this was reported as 13 but a further four became unwell, police said.

A 41-year-old man and woman, 24, have now been arrested on suspicion of possession of cannabis and child neglect on the grounds of exposure to harm.

The man was taken to a north London police station on Wednesday and released on bail to a date in November.

The woman, who was arrested the following day, remains in police custody.

The Standard understands that the sweets came from a bright green pouch marked "super potent formula" Nerd Rope Bites, decorated to look like the packaging for the popular children's chews.

Earlier this year, police in Norfolk warned: "Counterfeit packets of sweets packaged to look like Nerd ropes, but which state they contain cannabis and a high amount of THC... were being sold for £12."

In a letter to parents seen by MailOnline, the school’s headteacher Sophie Fegan wrote: “Once your daughter has recovered, I will need her to tell us how she came into possession of the ‘sweets’ and what she thought they were.

“I am sure you will be asking her these questions too: it would be most helpful if you would ask your daughter to prepare a written statement for me.

“We already know the name of the student who brought the sweets in, but we need to know more about how and why they were shared.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 quoting reference CAD 4524/5Oct.
