Two arrested after £10,000 of stolen York stone flags discovered - one of the victims was a 90-year-old man

Two men have been arrested on suspicion of theft after police discovered £10,000 worth of stolen York stone flags in Middleton.

Around 60 flags, some said to be as thick as a loaf of bread, were recovered near Middleton town centre on Monday.

The men, aged 46 and 28, were arrested at the scene.

The stone is thought to have been stolen from a number of locations in the area, including from the home of a 90-year-old man whose garden path was prised up and carted off.

Police and council staff have arranged to re-lay the stone at the pensioner's home.

The men have been released under investigation.

A post on the GMP Middleton Facebook said: "Yesterday officers arrest 2 males for thefts of York Stone.

"We've managed to locate the owners, one being 90 yrs old

"Officers are working with Rochdale councillors to arrange re-laying this for him."
