Two areas of Ireland set to be battered by rain as grim Met Eireann weather update published

Both Leinster and Munster are at risk of spot floods after a week of heavy rain, if Met Eireann's latest forecast is to be believed.

A mixed bag of a Bank Holiday weekend saw revellers around the country get soaked in queues after nightclubs reopened for the first time in over a year.

And anyone hoping to go trick-or-treating on Sunday could face similar issues, experts have warned.

Alan O'Reilly of Carlow Weather noted that things are looking "mild and unsettled" for the next few days, but warned that a number of current weather charts showing the country being battered by rain on Wednesday and Thursday.

Met Eireann's latest forecast backs up that theory.

Here's what the boffins at the national forecaster have said.

Tuesday

"Rain and drizzle will clear into the Irish Sea early on Tuesday morning to leave a mild and windy day. There will be a good deal of dry weather but with lots of cloud and a few patches of rain or drizzle. The best of any bright or sunny spells on Tuesday are expected in eastern counties.

"Mild, wet and windy overnight as a band of persistent and locally heavy rain in the west extends to all areas overnight with a clearance to scattered showers developing in the north and west towards dawn.

Wednesday

"Rain will persist in the south and east through much of the day and there will be a risk of some localised flooding. While there will be a gradual clearance to scattered showers and some drier and brighter intervals in the north and west.

"Outbreaks of showery rain will again push in from the south early in the night becoming heaviest and most frequent over Leinster and east Munster with a renewed risk of localised flooding"

Thursday

"A good deal of uncertainty for Thursday but indications are that it will be widespread showers or longer spells of rain at times however there will be some hazy sunny spells in the afternoon also"
