Two adults and two children taken to hospital after serious crash on the A19

Four people have been taken to hospital after a serious collision on the A19.

One man and two children have been taken to the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital in Cramlington , while a woman has been taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary.

Two vehicles collided on the southbound carriageway between Holystone and the Silverlink Roundabout on Sunday morning.

Emergency services, including Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service , attended at around 10am as one vehicle had caught fire.

One of the vehicles involved had also crashed into the central reservation.

The air ambulance was also called to the scene so both carriageways were closed by police and a diversion was put in place.

The extent of the patients' injuries is not known but they are believed to be non-life-threatening.

A spokesman for the North East Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 9.50am to a two vehicle road traffic collision.

“We sent three double-crewed ambulances, a Hazardous Area Response Team and a clinical care manager.

“The air support unit was also deployed.

“One adult male and two children have been taken to Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital A&E in Cramlington.

“One adult female has been taken to the RVI.”

A spokesman for Northumbria Police added: "There has been a two vehicle RTC where one has caught fire.

"The air ambulance was deployed to the scene so we closed both carriageways to allow it to land and take off again safely.

"We have reopened the northbound carriageway and we are doing some investigations on the southbound side.

"We're hoping to have that open within the next hour but there may be some repair work needed to the central barriers."
