Twitter was stunned by Manny Machado’s deal with the Padres

The MLB free-agency market had been quiet for superstars Manny Machado and Bryce Harper with teams taking their time to make any movement. That changed on Tuesday.

The San Diego Padres agreed to a 10-year, $300 million contract with the All-Star infielder, making him the highest-paid player in franchise history (second-highest in baseball history).

Machado is coming off a career-best season at the plate, hitting .297 with 37 home runs and a .905 OPS with both the Orioles and Dodgers. At just 26 years old, Machado is a cornerstone piece in the infield that the Padres hope to build around.

San Diego notably paid Eric Hosmer $144 million last offseason, and this latest move signaled that the Padres are serious about spending big to win. The baseball world, though, was shocked to see Machado choose the Padres.
