Twitter was mystified why USWNT coach Jill Ellis waited so long for substitutions in win over Spain

The United States women’s national team escaped the round of 16 with a win over Spain at the 2019 Women’s World Cup on Monday, but social media spent much of the second half screaming at head coach to make substitutions in a tight game that looked, at times, like Spain’s to win.

With Alex Morgan not looking like she was at 100 percent and Megan Rapinoe — who scored twice on penalty kicks — clearly exhausted, fans wondered what took so long before Carli Lloyd replaced Morgan in the 85th minute as the first sub. Rapinoe came out in the seventh minute of stoppage time.
