Twitter trolls mistake Michael Owen for Sky Sports presenter amid anger over Newcastle revelations

As so often happens with Twitter, ordinary folk are mistaken for a trending public figure.

An American Twitter user called John Lewis is often mistaken for the retail store, another American called Will H Smith who uses the tag @WHSmith is again often mistaken for the British retail store and then there is Ashley Kerekes who was given the nickname 'the Ashes' by her boyfriend.

She regretted using that as her Twitter tag during the 2010 series between England and Australia...

It even extends into the world of celebrities. The American actress Alison Becker is constantly lavished with praise from Liverpool fans gushing over Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson, while Steve Martin, the American actor and comedian, was bombarded by Newcastle fans' tweets in 2016 when a referee by the same name had a stinker against Nottingham Forest.

So when Michael Owen was the UK's top trend on Tuesday after the explosive extracts from his book were released, Newcastle fans were quick to let him know their feelings.

The anger was understandable, though. After all, Owen had called fans delusional, admitted he never wanted to join the club while picking up a £120,000 per week wage packet, and he slammed the club's record goalscorer for his 'un-Godlike' record as manager.

Unfortunately, some fans mistook MICHAEL Owen for Sky Sports News presenter MICHELLE Owen with some tweets that went beyond just criticism of Owen.

After highlighting a couple of abusive tweets, Michelle then tweeted: "In all seriousness there’s some vile stuff aimed at the actual Michael Owen on here - he’s had strong opinions but no excuse for such hate.

"In an age where we claim to care about mental health, perhaps remember that an actual person is on the receiving end of the vitriol."

Michael Owen then replied, saying: "Thanks for your kind words Michelle and I’m sorry that some of the abuse aimed for me has reached your twitter feed!"
