Twitter troll ordered to stay away from East Kilbride MP Lisa Cameron

Dr Lisa Cameron MP insisted abuse and harassment has “no place in politics” after an Internet troll branded her a child abuser.

The East Kilbride, Strathaven and Lesmahagow representative spoke out this week after John McCabe was told to stay away from the MP.

McCabe claimed the SNP politician had ignored his plea to investigate a sex abuse allegation and branded her a threat to children.

The 55-year-old, of Ayton Park South, Calderwood, admitted causing Dr Cameron fear or alarm by posting the message on October 7, last year.

At Hamilton Sheriff Court last week, he was issued a non-harassment order for posting the offensive Twitter message about her.

Speaking exclusively to the East Kilbride News, Dr Cameron described the ordeal as a “very difficult time” for her and her family, but insisted she would not let such incidents discourage her from serving her constituency.

She said: “It has been a difficult experience, but I’m determined not to let incidents such as this deter me in being as active and visible in my duties.

“I grew up in East Kilbride and remain firmly committed to representing our constituency and its people, now and in the future.”

Court heard how McCabe alleged he was sexually abused at the age of 17 at a detention centre in England.

That has led to him demanding a public inquiry into the alleged historic abuse, with Dr Cameron previously writing to the UK Government on his behalf.

However, court heard he was left scorned when the MP told him she could do nothing more for him.

In the offensive Tweet, McCabe branded her a “doctor of child sex abuse,” calling her “an incredible threat to children”.

The MP was distressed by the message and called in the police, telling them the post insinuated she was a child abuser.

Marco Guarino, defending, said McCabe posted the message because he felt “let down,” but now wished to apologise to the MP.

Sheriff Alasdair MacFadyen told McCabe: “Politicians are just as entitled as anyone else to live their lives and take care of their public duties without being subjected to conduct which causes fear or alarm.”

Social workers said McCabe served a “low risk” of re-offending, telling Sheriff MacFadyen that he was unfit to be considered for community work as an alternative to custody.

In the circumstances, Sheriff MacFadyen decided to “put him to the test” by deferring sentence for six months for good behaviour.

McCabe was also served with a non-harassment order banning him from communicating with the MP or posting anything about her for four years.

This is not the first time Dr Cameron has faced abuse during her political career.

We previously told how the MP was forced to install alarms and panic buttons at her home after she and her family were sent death threats the day after she was elected as the town’s representative.

The former NHS consultant said the threats included images of beheaded corpses and wording cut out from newspapers that she received through the post. That led police to up security at her constituency office.
