In an unprecedented move to get viewers more engaged with the upcoming 94th Annual Academy Awards, its governing body has announced it has partnered with Twitter for film fans to get in on the action of selecting their favorite movie of the year.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Monday that the Oscars Fan Favorite Award winner will be revealed during the live telecast March 27 on ABC.
Starting Monday, movie fans are urged to vote by entering the name of their favorite film of 2021 at OscarsFanFavorite.com, or on Twitter, using the hashtags #OscarsFanFavorite and #Sweepstakes.
Voters can give thumbs up to their favorite movie up to 20 times a day.
The move could direct some attention during the Oscars telecast to popular movies that traditionally get overlooked by industry professionals who select which films are worthy of awards.
Voting ends March 3.
But the Academy is looking ahead to the immediate future with their social media savvy endeavor; three lucky Twitter users who cast their votes will be selected for an all-expenses-paid trip to Los Angeles to present an Oscar at next year’s show.
“We’re thrilled to partner with Twitter to help build an engaged and excited digital audience leading up to this year’s ceremony,” AMPAS vice president of digital marketing Meryl Johnson said. “The Oscars are an opportunity to bring people around the world together through their shared movie love, and through these activations social media users around the world now have more opportunities to engage with the show in real-time, find a community and be a part of the experience in ways they’ve never been able to before.”
