After standing back for a little while to see where things are headed with the Big Ten’s potential reversal of course to delay the football season, Ryan Day spoke out today with a statement. The reaction was swift and hateful from many corners of the college football world.
However, there were some positive reactions too. We get it. It’s a polarizing topic. Some believe that the Big Ten was right in their decision to shelve things in the interest of health and safety for the student-athletes during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, there are others that believe the players should be able to play, especially since there are three out of five power conferences still forging ahead.
Many also believe (and rightfully so), the Big Ten has not been transparent or reactive with communication after so much criticism and questions regarding how it arrived at a decision, and what basis it did so.
But back to the reactions from Day’s statement today. We’ve pulled together some of the best Tweets (good and bad) after his statement was released by the university today. We’ve organized them as ones that support the statement vs. others that were critical.
We’re not judging, we’re simply laying out what has been seen. First, we’ll start with the negative because we like to end on a good note.

Negative reactions to Ohio State coach Ryan Day’s statement
This has always been about one team (Ohio State) wanting to compete for a national championship this fall. With a good enough team to win it.

At least we're down to brass tacks: The schools that voted not to play in the fall should change their vote so Ohio State can chase a national championship. Got that, Illinois/Indiana/Maryland/Michigan State/Michigan/Minnesota/Northwestern/Penn State/Purdue/Rutgers/Wisconsin? https://t.co/rQujAOEUop

Nothing to see here, just the coach of the Big Ten's most prominent program taking a blowtorch to his own conference. https://t.co/ydvO1K6hOI

This is getting uglier. Now Kevin Warren knows exactly how Michigan feels when it plays Ohio State https://t.co/ryv402qoId

Whatever Ryan Day's motive was to send that statement, I feel pretty confident right now in saying that he isn't helping the situation

Okay, now that we got that out of the way, here’s some of the positive reactions. Most come from the corner wearing scarlet and gray, but you get the idea.

Pretty sure that Michigan, Penn State, Wisconsin, etc. want to chase the national championship too. https://t.co/MToAUs2U9h

Ryan Day statement poses the question that is the crux of the Big Ten frustration:
Why can't they play?
They. Need. Answers. https://t.co/icEPWq2Wh5— Marty Smith (@MartySmithESPN) September 10, 2020
#Fight is more than just a slogan at Ohio State! When your backs are against the wall, you want your leaders to stand up and be counted. Coach Day is fearlessly being himself, fighting for our players with every fiber of his being. #itstimetoletthemplay! #proudtoBeaBuckeye! https://t.co/qtLwEtotOl

At the very least, Ryan Day and Ohio State deserve an answer to "why can't they play?" And it's crazy that we're a month into the cancellation of the fall Big Ten football season and it hasn't been given yet while we're all getting ready to watch Miami-UAB.

If you’re covering a game anywhere this weekend, or getting paid to talk about sports that are being played, it’s nothing less than to disgusting to attempt to shame a coach who is confused why HIS team can’t play.
Nasty, hypocritical, disgusting.
