Twitter reacts as Stephen Fry shares picture of cone statue on Royal Mile

Stephen Fry is celebrating his birthday in Edinburgh, and it seems the statue of David Hume on the Royal Mile is in a festive mood to match.

The beloved actor and presenter tweeted a picture of a traffic cone mounted on the Scottish philosopher's head on Saturday morning.

Fry, who is performing his "Mythos" show in the capital, said: "Thank you for all your very charming birthday wishes. A glorious Edinburgh morning. Someone put a cone on Davy Hume’s head…"

Folk were quick to accuse Edinburgh of stealing Glasgow's tradition of sticking cones on top of city centre statues.

Our colleagues over at Glasgow Live even said: "They can have their Fringe. But they can never take our...cone trend."

It's not the first time a cone has appeared on Hume's head, though the tradition is more famously associated with the Duke of Wellington statue in Glasgow.

Twitter users seemed to think it was indeed a cultural export from the west.

Oh well, it's nice to see Scotland's second city have some sort of representation at the Fringe. A lot of them will be visiting us in August after all.

One person Tweeted: "The weegies must be in town..." and another said: "In Glasgow, it’s an established sign of affection. Edinburgh has pinched it, affectionately."

Someone else replied: "No use. Edinburgh can’t do Glasgow."

Another said: "Ahem. We are not Glasgow. The cone will be coming right aff."
