Twitter picks Jack Dorsey for permanent CEO, ending months of speculation about who would lead company

Twitter has finally chosen one of its founders, Jack Dorsey, to be its CEO after it spent months without a boss.

Mr Dorsey has been running the company since Dick Costolo stepped down from the job in June. It was expected that he wouldn’t be able to take on the job permanently without resigning his position at another of his companies, Square, but Dorsey has confirmed that he will now do both jobs.

Mr Dorsey announced the news in a tweet, and was immediately congratulated by Mr Costolo, who stepped down from the company’s board at the same time.

Mr Dorsey followed the announcement with a tweetstorm, featuring a number of updates about how excited he was to lead the company permanently and what he intended to do.

The board said soon after Mr Costolo stepped down in June that it would “only consider candidates […] who are in a position to make a full-time commitment to Twitter”. That was thought to rule out Mr Dorsey for the job, if he didn’t step down from his payment company Square, but he will now run both companies.

Mr Dorsey won’t receive any compensation for leading the company, according to filings.
