Twitter may start charging some users £17 a month

240,000 Twitter users could be asked to pay £17 a month to use the platform under plans from new owner Elon Musk. Musk, who bought the social media platform for £38billion last week, is reported to be considering bringing in a usage charge for some people.

The fee would apply to users with a blue tick - which verifies your identity. There are around 240,000 blue tick users on Twitter.

According to Platformer, Twitter may now soon require users to have a paid subscription to Twitter Blue in order to retain their blue tick verified status, reports The Echo.

The move could also allow people to buy a blue tick by paying £17 a month. A number of verified Twitter users have reacted by saying they'd rather lose their blue tick than pay a fee.

Hank Green said: "I'll need to unsubscribe if they make verification conditional because paying for a check mark is 100% cringe". Nitin Upadhyaya said: "Instead of making verified [accounts] payable, Elon Musk should think of making it mandatory for every user. It will discourage fake and faceless accounts and bring more accountability among Twitter users worldwide".

A number of prominent figures have left Twitter or said they will leave after Elon Musk bought the platform - including Jameela Jamil, Mia Farrow, Shaun King, George Takei, Ken Olin, Alex Winter, Brian Koppelman and Shonda Rhimes.
