Twitter is testing pure black Dark Mode for Android - here's how to try it

Since it launched for iOS in March, Twitter’s ‘lights out’ dark mode has proved to be one of the platform’s most popular features.

The ‘lights out’ mode is a pure black colour palette that emits no lights since pixels are turned off, making it perfect to use in low-light settings.

Speaking back in March, Bryan Haggerty, Senior Design Manager at Twitter, said: “Giving more people options to personalise their experience on Twitter based on what makes them most comfortable is what the latest update to Dark Mode is all about.”

Unfortunately for Android users, the feature has only been available for iOS - until now.

Twitter is finally offering ‘lights out’ to members of Twitter’s Android alpha programme, before it’s rolled out to all Android users.

If you can’t wait to give your eyes a much needed break, here’s how you can try lights-out for yourself.

How to try Twitter’s 'lights out' Dark Mode

Android

If you’re an Android user, unfortunately the only way to try ‘lights out’ for now is to get invited to Twitter’s alpha app.

To do so, join the Twitter for Android Experiment group here , where you can get an invite to download the version directly from the Google Play Store.

iPhone

If you have an iPhone, you can test the feature for yourself now:

1. Go to Settings, then Display and Sound

2. There, you can toggle Dark mode on or off, and choose whether you'd prefer Dim or Lights Out. You can also toggle automatic dark mode on and off here
