A huge - and bizarre - debate erupted on Twitter today after a man posted a poll on whether people wash their legs in the shower.

Twitter user Conor Arpwel posted a poll asking whether people wash their legs when they wash in the shower.

More than 800,000 people have voted “yes” or “no” to the question, with the post racking up more than 3,000 likes.

Accompanying the poll Mr Arpwel wrote: “For the record, I do wash my legs but lots of people apparently don’t.”

Thousands commented on the poll, which was posted on Thursday and expires in three days, weighing in on how they felt about leg washing.

One commenter wrote: “I feel like you don’t really need to wash your legs, you wash your top 3/4 and the soap and water runs down. Unless you’re just extraordinarily dirty for some reason.”

Another agreed, adding her scientific opinion: “I am a Dermatologist and author of #beyondsoapbook. It discusses the harmful effects of soap on the skin and how over cleanliness has lead to diseases like eczema, asthma and allergies.

“You don’t lather up if you are not dirty. So no leg washing unless they are dirty.”

One user wrote: “They’ve been safe inside my pants, the whole day. What’s the problem.”

However, many were shocked that people did not wash their legs saying: “Everyone who voted no, think about all the toilet seats you’ve sat on and wash those thighs."

Another posted a picture of a loofa glove and wrote: “gifting everyone in the no category one of these.”

After the intense attention the post garnered on social media, Ms Aprwel wrote: “Oh my God, what have I done?”

He added: “I am a leg washer. Leg washing is an important component of my cleanliness regimen, but also I’m not out to get people who don’t wash their legs for various reasons.

“I only meant for this whole thing to be a fun and frivolous topic of conversation.”
