Twitter erupts over new Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle wearing lanyard with ceremonial robes at Queen's Speech

Social media has erupted over the new Speaker of the Commons after he was spotted wearing his lanyard with his lavish ceremonial robes at the State Opening of Parliament.

Sir Lindsay Hoyle, who was elected as the new Speaker in November, was met with a loud cheer as he led the procession into the Commons ahead of the Queen's Speech on Thursday.

But it was his lanyard which soon garnered a lot of attention on social media, which was seen - complete with his passport photo - hanging out of his ruffled outfit.

One user wrote: "Big fan of Lindsay Hoyle keeping his lanyard on" while another said it was "the best thing to happen this year".

Another wrote "Love the fact Lindsay Hoyle is still wearing his pass. Like the doorkeepers would stop him trying to get in the Commons if he wasn't."

A third commenter said: "Let me tell you how much I love that the new Speaker, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, is wearing his pass on a lanyard, outside his ceremonial robes, on the state opening.

"I don't think anyone will stop you, Lindsay."

Sir Lindsay had acted as John Bercow's deputy before he stepped down as Speaker on October 31.

Sir Lindsay, MP for Chorley, has already amassed a big fan base after it emerged he owns a parrot called Boris which he has taught to say "order, order" among other eccentricities.

The Lancastrian first saw his public profile rise after his handling of a spiky Budget speech in 2013.

Rebuking one unruly parliamentarian, he bellowed: "The panto season is not for another nine months."
