Thousands of Twitter users were unable to access the social media site as it faced a mass outage.

At its peak, according to monitoring site Downdetector, more than 70,000 people said they had experienced problems with the popular social media platform.

Downdetector, which monitors outages on social media, said the site began experiencing major issues at 2.45pm EST.

Some users were able to access the site at about 8.45pm, though many were still reporting issues.

Facebook, Instagram and other big social media platforms appeared to be working when Twitter went down on Thursday afternoon.

Twitter users were unable to access the site both online, on their phones and on iPads.

The site said: “Thanks for noticing – we're going to fix it up and have things back to normal soon.”

The Android app message said: "Cannot retrieve tweets at this time. Please try again later."

One Facebook user in Florida wrote: "Oh no. The world is going to end!! Twitter is down!!!!"

Twitter told the Standard it was "investigating issues people are having accessing Twitter."
