Twitter down: Social network site crashes leaving 40,000 without access

Twitter has crashed leaving 40,000 users without access to the social network.

Frustrated users began reporting issues shortly before 1am today, with many claiming that tweets were not loading and some saying they were unable to log into the app.

The social networking site says it is now working to resolve the issue.

In a tweet, Twitter Support wrote: "Tweets may not be loading for some of you. We’re working on fixing a problem and you’ll be back on the timeline soon."

Around 40,000 Twitter users reported issues with the social media site between 12.48am and 2.03am, according to the outage monitoring website Downdetector.com.

The website has also published a 'Twitter outage map' which shows issues have been reported by people across Europe and in the US.

Users in Mexico, South America, South Africa and the Philippines are also having problems with the site, according to the map.

One user wrote: "If I may, I will add to the list of current issues: not being able to tweet, retrieve, load tweets, bookmarks, or even log in now. It was working perfectly earlier today."

Another wrote: "Some people can't log back onto the twitter app either, it keeps saying error."

Millions were unable to send tweets for over two hours when the website crashed in October 2020.

The company said it was caused by an "inadvertent change" to Twitter's internal systems and the website was not hacked.
