Twitter DOWN: Social network crashes worldwide as thousands report problems

Thousands of people have reported that Twitter is down this evening.

Just shy of 2,000 people in the UK logged their issues on Down Detector after 6pm this evening.

Both the website and app had stopped working for some people.

The problems seem to be global, with users in the UK, US and New Zealand all reporting issues.

For some the app kicked them out and required them to log back in, while others said their Tweets wouldn't load.

It’s not clear what caused the crash or when all users will get full service from the social media platform again.

Users also reported issues with the social media site on Friday, again claiming they were having trouble accessing tweets.

The website made news earlier today when Tesla share Elon Musk launched a Twitter poll asking whether he should sell a tenth of his holdings.

Musk, the world's richest person, tweeted on Saturday that he would offload 10% of his stake if users of the social media network approved the proposal.

The Twitter poll asking Musk's followers if he should sell stock garnered more than 3.5 million votes, and 57.9% of the people voted "Yes".

Musk had previously said he would have to exercise a large number of stock options in the next three months, which would create a big tax bill.

Selling some of his stock could free up funds to pay the taxes.

"I only have stock, thus the only way for me to pay taxes personally is to sell stock," Musk wrote along with his poll.

"I was prepared to accept either outcome."
