The outage tracking website Downdetector.com showed tens of thousands of reported issues.
Users found themselves unable to open and read Tweets, with a “something went wrong. Try reloading” error message appearing on screens.
Twitter users in the UK, Pakistan, the US, Mexico, Brazil and Italy were among those reporting that the platform was not working.
It was not immediately clear what caused the outage.
Twitter did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
According to Downdetector, people starting experiencing problems around 1pm BST. The social media platform appeared to be working again by 2.15pm.
