Twitter users have been complaining that their direct messaging function (DMs) is down.
People across the world began to report issues with their DMs at around 10pm (GMT) on Tuesday evening, according to outage tracker Downdetector.
Twitter's support account tweeted its latest update on Wednesday morning, saying: "We’re having some trouble delivering DMs right now.
"You may be getting DM notifications, but not seeing the messages that were sent. As soon as this is fixed, we’ll let you know!"
But its main account jokingly tweeted: "DMs are fine. She just hasn't responded."
Some began speculating online that the messaging service was not actually down but #TwitterDMs had started trending because so many people were just posting about it.
However, many users were complaining that they were not receiving their messages.
One wrote: "Why aren’t twitter dms working ??" and another wrote: "Twitter dms acting up again."
A third said: "So twitter DMs are chalked, no messages are coming through at the moment....... RIP."
Many took the opportunity to post memes about the outage.
One user wrote: "me: no DMs no interactions. everyone: mY Twitter DMs aReN't WoRkInG" alongside a picture of a stressed-out SpongeBob SquarePants."
Another commenter tweeted: "How long has twitter dms been down. i texted my crush last week and haven’t gotten a response."
Some posted memes with captions like: "to everyone else who found out Twitter DMs were down only cos it was trending."
On its own account, Twitter posted a series of scathing tweets and replies about the reports which began with a post saying: "Twitter DMs is fine. She just hasn't responded."
Replying to a user who said: "Fix your app," the social media platform said: "fix your manners".
Another said: "Fix it then," to which Twitter responded: "OK what's her @ and we'll tell her to respond."
