Twitch has confirmed it was the victim of a huge data leak after the earnings of some of the website’s top streamers appeared online.
Details of creator payouts were among a number of things leaked in a 125GB document which emerged on the internet earlier on Wednesday.
The documents also appeared to show the source code for the Amazon -owned website. The leak of the data was also labelled as ‘part one’, which suggests that more unreleased information could be uncovered by hackers.
It currently remains unclear as to how much information has been accessed through the security breach.
A number of users have claimed they have been told to change their passwords.
And Twitch confirmed it is ‘working with urgency’ in its investigation of the incident.
The firm tweeted: “We can confirmed a breach has taken place. Our teams are working with urgency to understand the extent of this.
“We will update the community as soon as additional information is available. Thank you for bearing with us.”
Twitch has been a popular live streaming platform for gamers since it first launched ten years ago.
Gaming website Polygon reported that the website saw viewership surge by more than two thirds in 2020 while the majority of the planet stayed at home during the coronavirus pandemic.
Scots comedians Iain Stirling and Limmy are among the celebrities creating content for the website.
