Reckful was one of the first streamers on the platform and was also a professional e-sports player.

Just three hours before his death was reported, he tweeted: "Ahh, I feel bad for anyone who has to deal with my insanity."

He also wrote on Twitter: "Please just know in these situations the insane person does not feel in control of their actions."

His ex-girlfriend, known as Blue, appeared to confirm the news on social media.

She tweeted: "Someone I loved killed themselves. I wish I could have said something to prevent it... whyyyyy," adding "I keep thinking there's something I could have said or done... I wish I reached out more."

Sharing a video of herself with Reckful, she wrote: "Byron, I wish I could have helped you. We all do. I'm so sorry I couldn't Thank you for being a part of my life. Love you always."

Reckful had reportedly "proposed" to another of his ex-girlfriends on Twitter hours before his death.

He posted a series of pictures of the pair together and asked if she would marry him, adding that replies should not "make her feel pressured to say yes".

The pro gamer explained he had tweeted the proposal because he knew "she's the one".

Fellow gamers have paid tribute to Reckful on social media.

Marcus "djWHEAT" Graham, head of creator development at Twitch, took to Twitter to express his concern for the gaming community.

He wrote: "This isn't a 'F*** 2020' moment. This is a 'we need to pay attention to mental health' and 'we need better resources in the gaming/streaming community' moment.

"Yes 2020 SUCKS, but that's even more reason for us to recognise and combat the stigmas around mental health. RIP BYRON."
