'Twister' spotted in sky over Glasgow University

A 'twister' was spotted last night in the sky over Glasgow University.

Musician Stuart Murdoch from Belle and Sebastian spotted the funnel cloud as ominous clouds rolled over the city.

He tweeted a picture of it and said: "‘Here comes the twister!’ Almost. Interesting weather over Glasgow Uni last night."

A twister, or tornado, is a funnel cloud which touches a cumulonimbus cloud at one end and the ground at the other.

As the cloud pictured does not appear to touch the ground, it can't be called a true twister.

But the Met Office did confirm that Stuart's picture showed cumulonimbus clouds and the type of funnel cloud that can go on to become a twister.

A Met Office spokesperson said: "That does look like a funnel cloud.

"It has the characteristic spindly cone shape and is dangling beneath the brooding base of what must be a cumulonimnbus cloud.

"Friday, October 18, saw a number of showers across the UK and many of these were heavy and produced by cumulonimbus clouds."
