Twisted firestarter gang cause Cabinteely chaos with dangerous consequences

Emergency services rushed to the scene of a blaze after reckless vandals set a sofa on fire in a dry and bushy area in south Dublin.

The fire was contained thanks to the "swift response" of local residents and the fire department in a park off Johnstown Avenue in Cabinteely.

A warning on a local Facebook group said that the incident could have ended terribly had it not been for the quick-thinking of residents and the Dublin Fire Brigade.

The news comes as Howth has been ravaged by wildfires the past couple of weeks due to the extreme heatwave.

A high fire risk warning is in place until Friday.

The post on the social media page also urged parents to talk to their kids about "what is acceptable behavior and remind them of the dangers that fire brings".

The full notice read: "A fire was put out Sunday night in the park off Johnstown ave. A sofa was set on fire in a dry and bushy area and only thanks to the swift response of local residents and the fire department it could easily be a different story.

"This is an area where local kids like to hang out. If you have teenagers we are asking you to please have a word about what is acceptable behavior and remind them of the dangers that fire brings.

" We would also request that they are reminded to bring their rubbish home as the area is now also turning into a rubbish dump. Thank you very much."

Dublin Live has contacted Dublin City Council for a comment.
