The Twins dealt starting pitcher Lance Lynn to the New York Yankees and reliever Zach Duke to the Seattle Mariners on Monday as the Tuesday's non-waiver trade deadline loomed.
For Lynn, the Twins got 19-year-old minor league pitcher Luis Rijo and utilityman Tyler Austin. The Twins included cash considerations in the deal.
Rijo was signed as a 16-year-old from Venezuela. He is in his third season in the Yankees system, and is a combined 4-1 at three lower level minor league teams.
Austin, 26, appeared in 34 games for the Yankees this season and hit .223 with eight home runs. He is currently at Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Lynn, signed as a free agent during spring training, was 7-8 with a 5.10 ERA this season. He had 100 strikeouts and 62 walks in 102 1/3 innings.
For Duke, the Twins got two minor leaguers, including former second round draft pick Chase De Jong.
"There's a lot of things going on, not just here, but around the game as we get closer (to the deadline)," Twins manager Paul Molitor said. "In the next 23 hours there will probably be more flurry of activities."
MLB.com had the 24-year-old De Jong ranked as the No. 28 prospect in Seattle's system. The Twins also infielder Ryan Costello, 22, who wasn't ranked in Seattle's Top 30 prospects.
The price was Duke, a pending free agent, who was 3-4 with a 3.62 ERA and 39 strikeouts in 37 1/3 innings. Duke has 513 career appearances and has not allowed a home run this season.
The Twins signed Duke for $2.15 million this season and agreed to pay $75,000 of the $675,000 he had remaining on his contract for the Mariners, who would be a wild-card team if the season ended today.
"Love the guys in this room and I'm gonna miss them," Duke said. "But I'm looking very forward to being out there in a pennant race."
De Jong is a 6-4 right-hander who went 5-5 with a 3.80 ERA in 21 starts for Class AA Arkansas this season. He had 89 strikeouts in 120 2/3 innings. Drafted by Toronto six years ago, De Jong also pitched in the Dodgers system and made seven appearances, including four starts, in the big leagues for the Mariners last season, going 0-3 with a 6.35 ERA.
Costello, 22, has a league-leading 16 home runs with a .266 average and 70 RBIs this season for Clinton of the Class A Midwest League. He was the Mariners' 31st round choice in 2017 out of Central Connecticut.
