Twin sisters separated during Covid-19 pandemic reunite for 90th birthday

Twin sisters who were separated throughout the pandemic have reunited - to celebrate their 90th birthday!

Kathleen Galligan and Margaret Gilna headed off from Dublin to Galway on Tuesday afternoon, where they are taking a staycation to enjoy the milestone together.

The pair, who are originally from Ballaghaderreen, Co Roscommon, were born on May 30, 1931.

And they got engaged and even married on the same day, both tying the knot way back on April 15, 1958.

The sisters, who text still speak every day, left via a train from Heuston Station.

"We are so very close. We text or ring each other every day, sometimes twice a day," Kathleen told RTE News.

"When I heard our families were sending us on this trip, I was so excited. I couldn't believe it."

Margaret added: "I think what she thinks, and she thinks what I think. Not being able to see each other during the pandemic has been so hard.

"But I am so thrilled to be going on this trip with her. And we are both so well and healthy to be able to enjoy it...We will have a great time.

"Tomorrow we will have breakfast in bed and go for a walk around Galway. We won’t get much sleep - we will be talking and reminiscing all the time!"
