Two twin boys were found dead in a fenced-off pond after taking their animals out to graze in the hot afternoon sun.
After finishing school, Mehmet Aydin Gencturk and Aziz Salih Gencturk, both 13, took their animals out to graze in the area of Nirli in the district of Turgutlu in the western Turkish province of Manisa on 18th May.
When the boys failed to return home at the expected time of 4.30pm, their parents immediately contacted the police to report them as missing.
Meanwhile, a group of passersby noticed clothes by the side of a pond belonging to the Forestry Operations Directorate that was enclosed by a wire fence.
After finding the scene suspicious, they notified the police.
Police officers, diving teams of the Turgutlu Gendarmerie Command, and paramedics were sent to the scene.
The authorities started to drain the water in the pond with vacuum trucks, while divers entered the water to look for the missing twins.
Divers found the boys dead in the water and transferred their bodies to the Turgutlu State Hospital morgue.
It is believed they went into the pond to cool off from the afternoon sun.
Authorities do not currently suspect foul play.
Ibrahim and Yasemin Gencturk buried their sons the following day.
The twins, who had a five-year-old sibling, were buried side by side in the local cemetery.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
