Twilight author, Stephanie Meyer has today announced she is releasing a new novel in the vampire saga: Midnight Sun.
The announcement was made after Twilight fans crashed Meyer's site this afternoon, waiting for the end of her countdown which has been going since last week.
The countdown, which ticked down to 1:30pm BST today gave fans some long awaited news: that Midnight Sun, a previously shelved companion novel of the Twilight franchise, would be released on August 1.
"I'm very excited to finally, finally announce the release of Midnight Sun on August 1," Meyer told Good Morning America. "It's a crazy time right now and I wasn't sure if it was the right time to put this book out, but some of you have been waiting for so, so long it didn't seem fair to me for you to wait any more."
While Twilight is told from the perspective of protagonist Bella Swan, Midnight Sun tells the same story but from the perspective of her love interest, perennial teenage vampire Edward Cullen.
Fans got a glimpse of this novel when it was leaked in 2008, but after the leak it was put on hold until further notice.
Before the new novel was announced, other speculations included a film project to do with Meyer’s production company, Fickle Fish Films, which produce literary-related independent films like Austenland and an adaptation of Meyer’s novel, The Host (starring Saoirse Ronan).
Last week, the Twitter-sphere reacted to the impending news accordingly, many regressing to their early teen years.
One user, @sleepingcrowns said: “The countdown on Stephanie Meyer’s website is filling me with emotions I haven’t felt since middle school it’s time to break out my black eyeliner and Paramore CDs.”
Another, @stardustschild said: "Stephanie Meyer seems to be gearing up to release Midnight Sun (took the draft down from her site, moved Twilight up on her homepage, announced a 4 day long space themed countdown that is across all of her social profiles) and I am. Honestly hyped. Years of waiting are paying off."
With only a few months to wait before the book is released, a new generation of Twlight fans could soon emerge.
