Twice daily post-lockdown London rail return signalled by Hull Trains

Hull Trains has revealed details of its third return from lockdown hibernation.

The open access operator will be back on the rails on Monday, April 12, with two services in each direction on the London route.

It will step up to three on a Saturday and Sunday with an additional northbound service on the Friday.

The reduced timetable is pared down from the 92 services a week it had been operating pre-pandemic.

Unlike franchised routes there was no additional support for the First Group firm, with 33 redundancies announced last month.

The interim schedule also takes into account ongoing East Coast Main Line engineering works, including a closure on the weekend of April 23 to April 25.

An increase in frequency is anticipated on May 17.

Announcing the return date last month, managing director Lousie Cheeseman said: “We are returning with a reduced timetable at this stage while we monitor customer demand and steadily build the business back up. Now we have a roadmap out of lockdown, I’m really confident that more people will start to travel by rail again.

“It’s been a very challenging time for the industry and as an open access operator we have had to hibernate the business three times. This has impacted on our workforce and sadly, it was necessary to make 26 per cent of colleagues redundant.

“We have had to make other challenging cost saving decisions to protect the long-term future of the business and safeguard as many roles as possible.”

August's first return saw two services a day implemented - with the return north hampered by a fallen tree after four months off. The December return had seen more weekend services to cater for the Christmas run-in and returning students.
