Twenty One Pilots singer Tyler Joseph has apologised to fans after making a visual joke about his "platforms".
After followers urged the singer to make more of his influence by using his platform to spread social messages, Mr Joseph, 31, posted a photo of him in platform shoes on Twitter.
He captioned the post: "You guys keep asking me to use my platforms. Feels good to dust these bad boys off."
But many fans did not see the funny side, with some reacting angrily or with disappointment.
One supporter told the singer: "No that’s actually not what we mean. We would like you to speak up on the injustice in this country".
Another person added: "It’s disappointing to see you joke about this dude."
A third said: "That was not funny. not amused. Not a laugh. Not a chuckle. Not a haha or even a hehe. That was not funny at all. I would be embarrassed if I were you.
"You need a tutor on comedy and on humor cause this just isn't it. It was terrible. It was horrible. It was NOT Funny [sic]."
Mr Joseph, who has 2.2 million Twitter followers and 5.1 million on Instagram, then posted a series of links and resources about mental health.
For some fans this was not enough and they urged him to post about Black Lives Matter too. Others hit back and asked fellow supporters to stop harassing Mr Joseph.
He later added: "My tweet wasn’t suppose to be about human rights. So in case you are wondering where I stand: Black Lives Matter.
I just wanted to take a moment to raise awareness about something else that has meant a lot to me for a long time. But now I see there is no room for that right now.
"I'm truly sorry if it hurt anyone." He then posted a link to Black Lives Matter's resources page.
