Twelve-year-old girl with serious head injuries after being hit by car

A 12-year-old has been seriously injured after being hit by a car outside a school.

The crash happened near Neath Abbey Infants school on New Road, Neath Abbey, on Thursday afternoon.

Police in Skewen  have said the girl suffered "serious head injuries" and is being treated at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.

The crash, involving a gold coloured Peugeot 207, happened at school home time around 3.35pm .

South Wales Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision to come forward as well as anyone with dash cam footage of the incident.

The road remained closed for several hours whilst investigation work was carried out.

A spokeswoman said: "South Wales Police would like to take this opportunity to thank members of the public for their patience and understanding at this time. "

A team from the Wales Air Ambulance attended the scene.

A spokesman said: “Wales Air Ambulance attended an incident in the Neath Abbey area this afternoon. Our crew were mobile at 3.24pm and arrived at 3.35pm.

“Following treatment at the scene from our on-board consultant and critical care practitioner, we escorted the patient in a road ambulance to University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff. Our involvement was completed at 5.28pm.”
