Twelve people have appeared in court over the alleged gang-rape of a British teenager in Ayia Napa

Twelve people have appeared in court this morning accused of the gang-rape of a British teenager at a hotel in Ayia Napa.

The hearing was held behind closed doors as some of the accused - who are all Israelis - are minors.

An attorney for the suspect told media nine of those involved deny ever having met the alleged victim, while three admit they had sex but say it was consensual, the Times of Israel has reported.

The paper reports the victim had scratches on her lower body which are thought to have been 'deliberately inflicted'.

Defense attorney Nir Yaslovitzh told Channel 12 TV news: "Out of the 12 arrested, there are three central suspects.

"Nine of the suspects claim ‘we aren’t involved’ and three claim ‘we had sex with her but it was consensual'."

He said there is security camera footage from the evening when the alleged rape happened, which police are reviewing.

DNA samples have been reportedly taken from the suspects and their phones have confiscated amid suspicion they filmed the alleged attack.

Cypriot police are reported to have asked that the suspects be held in custody for another eight days.

The 12 suspects were arrested on Wednesday morning after the alleged victim filed a complaint with police

Meanwhile The Sun reports British tourists are believed to have attacked Israelis inside the hotel following reports of the rape.

As news spread of the victim's ordeal, the group of Brits apparently beat up the Israelis after previously becoming friends.

Yesterday the Foreign Office confirmed it is 'supporting a British woman who was assaulted in Cyprus and are in contact with local police'.

Israel's Foreign Ministry also confirmed it was aware of the case.

"Their families have been updated."
