Twelve people arrested in Ayia Napa over alleged gang rape of British teenager

Twelve people have been arrested over the alleged gang rape of a British woman in Cyprus, according to reports.

Local media say the alleged victim told police she was attacked in a hotel in the popular resort of Ayia Napa on Tuesday night.

According to the BBC , police confirmed they have arrested twelve suspects who will appear in court in Paralimni on Thursday morning.

The Foreign Office confirmed it is "supporting a British woman who was assaulted in Cyprus and are in contact with local police".

The Times of Israel newspaper reports that the twelve people detained are Israelis aged as young as 16 and 17-years-old.

Israel's Foreign Ministry confirmed it was aware of the case.

In a statement, the government department said: "The Israeli consul in Nicosia, Yossi Wurmbrand, is following developments and is in contact with the detainees.

"Their families have been updated."
