Twelve migrants found alive in refrigerated truck in Belgium

Police have found 12 migrants alive in a refrigerated truck in Belgium.

The driver, who was transporting fruit and vegetables, called police who found 12 adult men of Syrian and Sudanese origin hiding in the trailer.

They were taken to the Immigration Office in the city of Antwerp, officials said.

Last week, 39 migrants were found dead in a refrigerated truck in Essex after crossing from a Belgian port.

Belgian authorities, facing increasing scrutiny of their fight against human trafficking, are cooperating with British authorities in the investigation.

Belgian officials said the trailer found in Essex came from Zeebrugge last Tuesday and was picked up by a lorry cab in Purfleet, Essex at about 12.30am the following day.

The discovery sparked a huge international investigation to try and identify the victims.

It is not yet known when the victims entered the trailer - where temperatures can be as low as minus 25C if the fridge is activated - or the exact route it travelled.
