Twelfth of July clean-up bill over £23,000

Council workers spent almost 1,000 hours on the clean-up operation after this year's Twelfth of July celebrations, new figures show.

A Freedom of Information request by Belfast Live found more than £23,000 was spent on the clean-up - up more than £2,000 from £21,000 last year.

The figures from Belfast City Council revealed the breakdown in costs consisted of £16,615 in staff pay for the clean-up after Eleventh Night bonfires across the city, as well as street celebrations on the Twelfth.

Of that £14,767 was spent on night shifts, when workers put in 824 hours, while a further £1,848 went on day costs covering 134 hours of work.

An additional £6,956.42 was spent on the hire of specialist cleaning equipment and vehicles.

In total, 958 hours of labour and £23,571.42 of public money were spent on this year's clean-up.

Information provided through the FOI also revealed nine areas across Belfast were particularly badly affected.

They were Bedford Street, Dublin Road, Shaftesbury Square, Lisburn Road , Malone Road (House of Sport roundabout) Sandy Row , Templemore Avenue, Lower Newtownards Road and Albertbridge Road.

Between 2013 and 2019, the most spent on cleaning up after the celebrations was in 2015, when £31,148 was paid out, according to previous reports.

It was also revealed recently that Belfast City Council awarded grants totalling almost £46,000 for 35 bonfires across the city on July 10 and 11 through its bonfire and cultural expression programme.

The hand-outs are aimed at reducing the use of hazardous materials such as tyres on the pyres.

Groups can apply for up to £1,750 for each fire, with some community organisations getting more than one grant.

The total dished out through the scheme was also up on last year, when £42, 570 was paid to 28 bonfires.
