Twelfth celebrations NI: 10 things to expect and what they mean

With less than a week to go until the big day preparations are well underway to make sure traditions are upheld.

But have you ever wondered why banners are embroidered with LOL? Trust us its no laughing matter, or do you not know what the sash represents?

10 things to expect and what they mean

'Bonnie' - the eleventh night bonfire lit to celebrate the victory of King William over King James in 1690.

1690 - the year King William of Orange was victorious at the Battle of the Boyne.

A man with black curly hair, riding a white horse - King William III (King William of Orange).

Orange sash - worn to remember those who fought during the Battle of the Boyne.

White gloves and bowler hats - along with the sash, these are also traditional dress of the Orange Order.

Grand Master - is the head of the Orange Order. Edward Stevenson has held this position since 2011.

L.O.L - stands for Loyal Orange Lodge, usually followed by the number of the lodge marching. E.g LO.L No 121

'The Field' - where the parade rests before marching home again.

Poppies - to remember those who fought and died at the Battle of the Somme.

Union Jack/Ulster Flag - represents unionism.
