TV viewers criticise Mick McCarthy commentary in Ireland defeat to Finland

TV viewers of Ireland's 1-0 defeat to Finland directed their ire at Mick McCarthy for his commentary during this evening's match.

The former Ireland boss was on co-commentary duty for the Nations League clash and some Ireland fans watching at home were less than impressed with McCarthy's analysis.

Laurence Kinlan asked: "What year did Ireland win the World Cup with Mick McCarthy?"

Another Twitter user was put out by McCarthy's analysis on Ireland winger Daryl Horgan, tweeting: "Mick McCarthy used to manage Daryl Horgan. Talking there about "his favoured left foot"... he is right footed Mick ."

While another commenter said: "Keeper has had nothing to do says Mick McCarthy, minutes after he tipped the Doherty header over the bar."

Some viewers bemoaned what they perceived as mispronunciation of Jeff Hendrick's surname, with one commenting: "Will somebody at @SkySports please tell Mick McCarthy there is no S at the end of Jeff Hendrick......."

Another said: "Someone tell Mick McCarthy it's 'Hendrick' not 'Hendricks'"

However, not everyone was critical of Big Mick, with one fan saying: "Mick McCarthy summing up the current Ireland set up perfectly, "whatever about performances you've gotta win games".

"Some really naive performances under Kenny and no signs of it changing any time soon."

It was a frustrating night all-round for those watching Ireland in Helsinki as they fell to a 1-0 loss thanks to Fredrik Jensen's second-half goal.

It meant Finland completed a Nations League double over Ireland in front of 8,000 home supporters in Helsinki and left McCarthy's successor Stephen Kenny still searching for his first win as Ireland manager.
